Haggstones / Tagstones, Oughtibridge near Sheffield
« on: Monday 05 September 16 20:49 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate Tagstones but I wonder if it is an alternative spelling of Haggstones?  I can't find Tagstones on any old map of the Oughtibridge area, although there is a Taglands Wood.  If anyone has any proof either way, I'd love to hear!

Thanks Stan, but I was wondering about Tagstones as opposed to Haggstones.  That spelling (with a T) appears a lot in the records, and it's definitely a T not an H.
Chempat, I am researching my partner's family of Bramalls.  They came from Birtin Farm [Oughtibridge].  Just trying to sort out the various families, as there were far too many Johns and Josephs!
As a coincidence, we asked for a quote from a Stocksbridge guy for some guttering last week, and the invoice came from Birtin Farm!

The above contains a reference to Hollin Hill or Tag Stones.

Hollin Hill is next to, on the west, of Hag Stones.

I do wonder though if this was a miss-hearing of a Yorkshire accent, as in t,internet.

Hm, that's interesting, thanks.  I did wonder about the Yorkshire Accent thing, but the place was consistengly spelt Tagstones.  Perhaps it just changed over time.  Birtin became Burton for instance.

As an aside, a fellow Donkersley researcher took years to find her ancestor's birth record.  The child was the son of a Yorkshire soldier and an Irish mother, and the child was born on board a ship bound for India.  Not only was the poor child, a boy, listed as a girl, but his mother's name was was recorded as  Dinhersley! (the result of an Irish lady telling an Indian clerk her Yorkshire name)

Martha, dau of James Brammal of Tagstones, was baptised at Bradfield (Sheffield) on 29 Dec 1811 and married Charles Fletcher at Sheffield Cathedral Church 20 Nov 1832.  She died 19 Jan 1834 and was buried at St Philips, Sheffield. Charles re-married but doesn't appear to have had any descendants.
