ROBINS GLASGOW
« on: Saturday 23 July 05 16:32 BST (UK) »
I have a family mystery.  I found two unknown brothers of my grandfather, the eldest of whom and the first born) born 205 Watt Street Glasgow, 13 June 1876.  Born to Samuel Bickford Robins and Harriet Walter who married 1875 in Willesden Middlesex.  All other children were born in London.

Why did she give birth in Scotland and what was at 205 Watt Street, a hospital or private residence and if so, who lived there at the time? Were they visiting a relative?

If anyone can give any help here I would be so grateful.  Samuel's father was William Robins, b 1806 but I don't know where., but he married in East Stonehouse, Devon.  William's father was a John, again born ?, where?.

Here's hoping
Regards
Sue

205 Watt street appears to be a standard glasgow tenement building with 7 families resident in the 1881 census none of them share your names.

This is the only entry on the 1881 Census for 205 Watt Street that shows anyone from England. Possibly a relative?

Thanks Falkyrn and Janice - can't see any clues yet!

Does anyone have 1871 census with that address?

Just logged on to Scotland's people today to realise I still had 29 credits which had expired - so annoying - I need  to find a few more Scots rellies to make it worthwhile!

All those questions which remain unanswered intrigue me.  Why would anyone travel to Scotland heavily pregnant or were they indeed living there already, or did she go into premature labour?

Hi Sue
Probably you have this -  likely the family in C81, with the Scots born son Henry N ROBINS

Dwelling: 24 Trelaway Rd
Census Place: Hackney, London, Middlesex, England
Source: FHL Film 1341065     PRO Ref RG11    Piece 0302    Folio 11    Page 16

Samuel ROBINS M 33  M Middlesex, England
 Rel: Head
 Occ: Warehouseman
Harriett ROBINS M 28  F Putney, Surrey, England
 Rel: Wife
Henry N. ROBINS U 4  M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
 Rel: Son
Charles C. ROBINS   1  M Hackney, Middlesex, England
 Rel: Son

Do you know the name of Samuel's mother - (But see below) - maybe she and father William can be found on C81 or C71 easier that way and would give indications of William's birthplace.  ALso do you have any siblings names for Samuel? Perhaps one of them was in Scotland at some stage.

With regards, Harriet nee WALTER, what were her parents & siblings names? Again, perhaps one of them was in Scotland around time of Henry's birth - any idea what the middle name "N" could be? A possible reason for Samuel being born in Scotland is that Harriet was with her own mother or close female relative during her confinement with first-born child - this was a common practice I believe.

I may have found Samuel in C71, with his widow mother & sister:
London, Hackney, St John:
RG10/321  - RD - Hackney  - Sub-registration district: West Hackney
ED: 1b , Folio:    27 , Page: 48 Household schedule number: 267

Eliza G ROBINS - Head - Widow - 62 - Laundress - born Devonport, Devon
Samuel B ROBINS - Son - Single- 24 - Warehouseman - born Kensington, Middlesex
Eliza A ROBINS - Dau-single-19-Shirt Dresser (?) - born  Southwark, Surrey
Henry KEMP - Boarder-Single-27-Mine Porter- born Bocking, Essex
Frank ANDREWS - Boarder- Single-22 (Private) Coachman - born Middlesex

Also may have found him in C61, at least it is the same Samuel B off the C71:
St George, Southwark, Surrey
RG9/332 ; RD:St George Southwark  Sub-registration district: London Road
ED:3  ; Folio:72  Page:31/32 Household schedule number:    184
Parliment Street??
Eliza G ROBINS-Head-Widow-53- M-------?-born Devonshire, Devonport
William G ROBINS-son-16-C------?-born Bayswater, Middlesex
Samuel B ROBINS-Son-14-Errand Boy-born Kensington, Middlesex
Eliza A ROBINS-Dau-9-Scholar-born St George, Surrey

Send me a pm with your e-mail address.

The son William G in C61. could be this off IGI:
William George ROBINS
born 22 OCT 1844, & Christened: 05 JAN 1845 Saint James, Paddington, London,
Father: William ROBINS & Mother: Eliza GILBERT.

So assuming the C61 & 71 family is your Samuel Bickford ROBINS, and I think they are, you have a date range for his father William's death between 1851 and 1861; a place they could have been in 1851 (where he may have died) ie: Southwark, Surrey. And his mother's name Eliza nee GILBERT.

I wonder if BICKFORD then was the maiden name of Harriet's mother, since it seems not Samuel's mother's maiden name.

Samuel's brother William G is on C81 in Middlesex with his own family and sister Eliza A (see below), but I couldn't find his mother Eliza G, so she may have died by then.

Hello Ann

Thanks for your really comprehensive reply this morning.  I do actually have most of the English census info and as you will have seen there seem to be no clues to the Scottish link.

My real sticking point is the fact that William Robins, Samuel's father died in 1859 and although I have found him and Eliza G on the 1851 census no birth place is given.  I think they would have been in Kensington in 1841 but that census is lost.  At one point I was going along the lines that maybe William was born in Scotland to his father John - but that has drawn a blank too.  All the information is too sketchy!

Thanks very much for the birth date for William G - I will probably pursue that certificate.  However, what is interesting is that his mother Eliza Gilbert's surname is BICKFORD and that has been missed off.

Henry Robins middle name is actually William - it was recorded as N on the census!  I have that from the birth record on Scotlandspeople.

The tip about researching a bit more on the Walter side is useful.  I know Harriet was born in Purley and her father is a Henry but more than that I don't know.  I have been very obsessive about the Robins and not delved further on the Walters!

What I didn't make clear in my previous post is that I was interested in the 1871 Scottish census to see if I could get a clue from the 205 Watt street address so I'm sorry I've put you to all that work.  However, saying that you have given me some really useful pointers and I can now see how I am going to occupy a good part of the day instead of getting on with the housework!

Best wishes
Sue
