simon family.
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 08:46 BST (UK) »
i am trying to trace any family members of a  liuet frank simon  from the 2nd Otago regt in ww1. he also had a brother Horace in the regt, frank was kia  in 1918 I think, not sure about Horace .  frank married an irish girl from Dublin, frank was a medical student in Dublin at the outbreak of the war and joined the 9th batt royal Dublin fusiliers but was posted to the otagos in 1917. I have a couple of diaries from frank during and up to his death in ww1 ,they should be with a family member. [I have tried the army museum in n.z with no luck yet].

CWGC website gives this additional information
Son of Thomas and Edith Simon; husband of M. E. Simon, of 23, Ainger Rd., S. Hampstead, London

Just to add the detail:
Lieutenant Frank Simon 66142 1st battalion Otago Regiment NZEF, died 10 January 1918, buried The Huts cemetery grave XV.A.16
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission page has a downloadable certificate.
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1

I couldn't find Horace Simon on the CWGC site, so he may have survived the war.  There is a medal index card for Lieutenant Horace Simon of the Northumberland Fusiliers who might be your man.

All the best
Philip

Hi thenall,

The following should help in your efforts to find family who may like Frank's diaries:-

Frank Simon's marriage notice

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THD19170510.2.19?query=frank%20simon

A 1925 Electoral roll shows Mamie Simon as a widow of 56 Oriental Parade, Wellington.

Horace Simon's marriage notice

The birth of a son to Horace and Phyllis

There are immigration records between New Zealand and Australia for Frank Derek/F D Simon on FamilySearch eg

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QJDK-X8BF

Brothers Frank B: 1890 and Horace B: 1894 also had a sister Fanny/Frances who was born to Edith nee Mat(t)hews and Thomas Simon in 1896.

Fanny's marriage notice - note she married 'Abraham' Paykel not Alf as in the notice

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19270114.2.3?query=paykel

They made their home in Australia and the 1935 NSW electoral roll gives their address as 2A cooper St., Strathfield.  The birth of a daughter is announced in The Sydney Morning Herald in 1931 and the engagement of their eldest daughter in 1947.
