Thank you avm. Not sure whether that helps me or adds to my confusion!

I'm trying to find Joshua, son of Raphael Joshua JOSEPH and Emma CHAPMAN born around 1848 (according to his death cert in Qld, Australia. I know he studied medicine (I have his certificate somewhere in the house but can't find it at the moment, I think it was at Guy's Hospital). I have seen a marriage for Raphael and Emma at Liverpool in 1846 which I assumed (maybe incorrectly) was the right one, but certainly didn't factor South Africa into the equation.  ??? The father, Raphael, came to Aust too, but no sign of Emma (who possibly died at Liverpool 1848). Raphael's death cert had his father as Joshua, but no mother known, so I don't know that this Hester is the right one?

Sorry if that's a bit rambling ... trying to get my head around it. Thank you once again!

I think we can sometimes underestimate how mobile some people were, especially when there were things like fortunes and land and gold to seek, so South Africa might be possible.  I just wouldn't have wanted to do it by ship in crinolines.

Raphael Joshua Joseph is shown as joining the British Lodge of Freemasons (no. 419) in the Cape of Good Hope in 1855.  He was not initiated there but apparently transferred from another lodge, no. 223, as did a Maurice Joseph at the same time (possibly related?).

By 1881 Raphael Joshua Joseph (an accountant) was a member of a Freemasons' lodge in Brisbane.

Oh fantastic find Jamjar - there Hester is in 1851 married to a Joshua! Certainly looks promising. Even shows her mother  ;D ;D

And thanks too avm, I have that Raphael was a "bookkeeper" in Qld, and he and his son were freemasons, but didn't know about the joining inCape of Good Hope in 1855. All coming together where I never thought to look.

You're absolutely right hurworth, distance didn't seem so much of an issue in Australia, and I always (apparently wrongly) assumed people were more stay at home in England. Wouldn't want to go anywhere in crinolines!

I can only see one Raphael on the '41 and he'd is too old to be Hester's son.

Hester's husband Joshua was recorded as a shoemaker in 1841 when the family was in the City of London (Minories).

Possibly relevant is the Freedom of the City Admission record of 18 January 1844 for Joshua Joseph, boot and shoe maker of Skinner St,* Snow Hill in the City of London.

Joshua is described as a British-born subject, the son of an alien, Raphael Joseph, a native of Germany who came to England "about sixty years since" and married an Englishwoman but was not naturalized.

*Just noticed that the family was in Skinner St in 1851.
