Annie Mitchell
« on: Wednesday 05 October 16 12:55 BST (UK) »
According to 1891 census, Annie was the niece of William Chalcraft b. 1837 Godalming and Mary ? b. 1842.

Any one got any ideas as to how this relationship came about?

Think the best thing to do would be to get a copy of the birth for  Annie Mitchell 1881 Guildford to see what it says

If the term is being used strictly, it means that one of Annie's parents, either her mother or her father, was a sibling to either William Chalcraft or Mary X.

So you may have to look further than the obvious - if Annie's parents are Mr Mitchell and Mrs nee X, and it is her mother who is the sister of Mary Chalcraft nee X, you wont find the link ubtil you have established "X" !

Just to make it harder, "niece" may be being used in a wider sense, possibly for Great-niece, and then would have to go back a further generation to find the link! Hopefully not.

FreeBMD has a likely marriage?

December qtr 1864
Guildford Registration District     vol 2a, page 103

Chalcraft, William
+ and on the same page +
Arthur, Mary Ann
Millman, Mary Ann

The presence of William Arthur in the 1891 household suggests a link?

I am grateful for the Millman link that fits nicely. I'm still no further forward with the Mitchell incursion into the Chalcraft clan.

???
It's the Arthur link I was pointing to ;D

You need to trace all William's sisters, and see if any of them married a Mitchell.
Likewise all Mary Ann Arthur's sisters.

There are other Mary Ann Arthurs baptised West Horsley around the same time, you really need the marriage to find out which is the correct one.

As you were asking after Annie maybe it is best to do as suggested and get her birth certificate

"niece"    was used more loosely  at that period than it is today,  she may have been fostered within the family  for one reason or another.   How many other children were in the family, do you know?
