Croat soldier in Trieste in 1914
« on: Saturday 15 October 16 12:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am researching a Croat soldier born in 1875 who was in Trieste in 1914 prior to the outbreak of WW1 (see photo). I think he must have been serving in the Austro-Hungarian army, but am not sure. He was using the name Giovanni ZINDAREC/IC at the time. I am after help with two things:

1. Can anyone identify the uniform worn in the photo?

2. If identified where would the military records be? I have seen Vienna as one archive but wondered if anyone had experience of this? :)
Many thanks

Although the photograph is poor quality I downloaded it and rotated and improved it. The hats look like Austro-Hungarian ones.

Many thanks Regorian. Do you know where I might find his military record?

Hello Ali,

No, I'm afraid not. At a guess, Vienna for records for Austro-Hungarian Army. Croatia might just be an alternative.

Hi,

i was researching my ancestors in WW1 in Austro-hungarian army. I wrote e-mails to Vienna archives but had no luck they didnt' find anything because most of military records for Croatian soldiers was succeded to new Kingdom SHS (later Yugoslavia). I tried Belgrade archives and Zagreb also but no luck. Most of the records are probably lost or destroyed. But there is no reasonj not to try to write e-mail to Vienna.

Sincerely

Monke

As an update to this post, I have found this man's Baptism Record in 1875 in the village of  Sela Zagorska in Croatia. His confirmed name is Joannes Znidarec. However, I am still keen to track down his military record, which from previous posts would suggest he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army in Trieste.
