Edgerton Cemetery, Huddersfield
« on: Tuesday 18 October 16 10:03 BST (UK) »
I was wondering please if someone could do me a favour if they are in the cemetery at all.

I am trying to identify if this grave has a headstone (not sure if it will) and if so please could someone get a photo - I would be very greatful :)

We therefore checked the burial register for Edgerton cemetery, which under the circumstances was the most logical.  We located the following entry in the unconsecrated section:-
Burial no 27292, burial dated 26th July, 1941, Andrew Nolan, labourer of 28 South Street, this was a single interment (ie not a family grave), Section 19R no. 119, the ceremony being performed by Rev P J Power.
Nolan, Cremins & O'Connor - County Kerry, Ireland.
Keogh - Queen's County (Laois)
Stack - Limerick & Clare

Your earlier post regarding this burial suggests

Please note that fact that this was a single interment would imply that there would be other persons in this grave, but they would not necessarily, and in fact probably not, be in any way connected to Mr. Nolan

If it is a communal grave it is doubtful there is a headstone.

Have you tried contacting the cemetery  :-\

I did think that also but was hoping if someone was local and are there if they could check for me.  I haven't contacted the cemetery as of yet as dont believe they have an email contact and would have to resort to old fashioned postal mail :) - that was the information provided from the local studies team at the library there.

Would snail mail not be the best option before someone goes there for you in case there is no headstone  :-\

This link suggests that the headstones are in the process of being photographed, albeit slowly

Ok no problem will contact them.  I wasn't expecting anyone to go out of there way for me - it was only if they were there anyway I was asking.

Hi

Single grave would be a gave with multiple interments and it is very unlikely it would have an headstone and all the cemeteries could do is look in the other book and tell you who else is buried in the grave which wouldn't be your family.

Thanks John for both posts against this subject.  I think I shall have to reside with the fact there was no headstone against it - I didnt think there would be as he never married I dont believe.

Would they be able to tell me who paid for the plot for him?

Hi

If he had any money it would have come out of his estate, so it would be himself that paid for the burial. He was in the unconsecrated section that means he could have been Roman Catholic or Chapel, they could have helped with the cost otherwise it would have been a paupers grave.

The consecrated section was for Church of England.
