Birchall from Manchester, England & Neath, Wales

Hi Everyone

This is a bit of a long shot, we are trying to find Edwin Birchall, born 11 January 1907 in Barton on Irwell District, Manchester.

He was married to our nan Gladys Price in 1935 and had a daughter Glenys in 1935. Gladys and Ted fell out and he moved away - we dont know where, but it is rumoured he remarried and had further children, and he may have moved abroad.

We have searched the UK but to no avail, I do not think he is alive today as he would be 98 and his family history isnt one of longevity!


His mother was Mary Jane Thompson born 1883 Patricroft, salford, his dad was Henry Birchall - known as Harry born 1885 Eccles, Barton moss.  His brothers and sisters were Frank Birchall b 1908 Barton on Irwell, Jack Birchall born 1912 Neath South Wales, Edith and Mary Birchall born 1917 in Neath.

The family moved from manchester to Neath abt 1910 along with Mary's brother Thomas Henry (known as Harry) and her sister Jessie.

At some point Ted moved back to Manchester, probably during the 1920's to look for work.  He lived in Beanfields Worlsey, with his aunt Janet Jones (nee Thompson) and uncle Bill Jones, this was where he met Gladys.

The last known sighting of him was at his sister Mary's funeral in Neath in 1946, she had tragically comitted suicide.  He did not attend his mum and dad's funerals, both in 1957 Neath.

He was keen gymnast and travelled the UK demonstrating techniques to YMCA members.

if there is anyone out there who knows of anyone with the surname Birchall, could you please get in touch with them and let them know of our quest?

we are desperate to find out what happened to him and to know if Glenys has any 1/2 brothers and sisters.

Hi John

Nice to meet you! I have a lot of information about Birchalls  going back to the 1700's in Irlam etc.  But the one I'm most interested in is TED (Edwin) b 11 January 1907 - last seen in 1946 at his Sisters funeral in Neath South Wales - he only stayed for the day then the rest of his family didnt see him  again - No Idea where he went!
