Herbert Bower d9/10/1917
« on: Friday 21 October 16 02:54 BST (UK) »
My great uncle, Herbert Bower died in action and was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Would the battle have been at Passchendaele?
He was only 25; enlisted in 1915 in 'Honorable Artillery', regimental number 5446; sent to France 2/10/1916. He was just so young; occupation library assistant.
Sadly, he is just one of a number of my extended family who died in WW1.

He enlisted Nov. 1915 as a Territorial with the 2/1st. HAC. 22 Bde. 7th. Division. Embodied 22/11/15 & indeed was at the 2nd. Battle of Passchendaele.
Being a Pte. indicates he was in one of the 4 Infantry Coys. of the Regt.
He was granted 10 days leave on the 17/8/17.
At least his family got to see him which didn't happen in most cases.

Thank you for the extra information, it does make things a bit clearer.

I haven't read it myself but the book "Over the top - a PBI in the HAC" by a man who served in the 2nd Bn HAC https://www.amazon.co.uk/Over-Top-P-B-I-H-C/dp/1843421267
apparently has a good account of the battle at Reutel where, according to his HAC record card, your great uncle lost his life. (The card initially had 9th October 1917 later amended to 19th).

Edit - clear from the war diary that he was killed on 9th October as stated.
I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Thank you again for that. I am not sure about reading the book as I am not really into war memories but I know someone who might.
