Help with a Divorce
« on: Sunday 23 October 16 07:59 BST (UK) »
I am helping a friend out with this one and have got a little stuck, and I am hoping there may be someone out there who may have a few ideas:
The husband is Charles E Hignett (b.1902) and the spouse is Eunice Lilian Coulter (b. 1914) married 2 Aug 1937 in Fulham. Eunice remarries in 1945, and the first husband is still alive so we are looking for a divorce between 1937 and 1945. Charles Hignett was married before and it seems his first wife died in 1937 so he quickly remarried. Eunice goes off to Australia with the new husband Frederick TC Smith (they married 3 July 1945) a few years later.

There are many other recent threads similar to  this one which you can refer to on this board for additional help.
It can be costly to ask the HMCTS at High Holborn, London to search the index of divorces.

Have you got a copy of the marriage certificate for the 1945 marriage?

Yes I do have the marriage cert and it does say divorced wife of Charles (Edward? bad writing) Hignett but nothing more. I looked up the search and it looks like it's £65 now. J

Have you looked for them on the 1939 register.

A useful guide from TNA:

I saw that earlier but was wondering whether there was some other sneaky way of finding out the divorce without paying the fee for the search. Unfortunately my early newspaper searches have drawn a blank, but I doubt it were really newsworthy. J

Only on Findmypast? I'm not on them anymore, if that's the case.

Thanks for that 1939 register. Can't search but not go beyond unless I subscribe. Can't see anything as yet, will check if maiden name comes into play.

Do you need proof for legal reasons such as administration of a will?
