Medal Info please
« on: Saturday 12 November 16 00:42 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone explain what "LS & AC medal with Grat AO" means.   I'm guessing the LS bit might be Long Service.   The medal was granted in 1921 following 19 years of service, including with the British Expeditionary Force.

Any chance it could be "LS &GC". -  (Long service and Good conduct)?

I agree, it is most likely Long Service and a Good Conduct, with Gratuity., not sure about the AO.

LS&GC are/were awarded under authority of an AO (Army Order).  If there is a number following the AO then that would tie it right down.  I believe in that time frame it was AO 183 of June 1916 but am prepared to be shot down in flames over the specific AO.

Quick PS.  Gratuities were also covered by an Army Order, may refer to that.  Is there a number following?

Thank you all so much.   Yes, I had misread GC for SC.   I am attaching a copy to show the numbers that follow AO.   I'm wondering if it's part of a date?   The entry above has 20 where this one has 21.

Could be.  Can't find an AO 10 of 1921.  Could well be read as "Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and Gratuity in accordance with the relevant AO.  October 1921" (which may fit his end of service date?

The ree above to the London Gazette is a date.

Hi maxD,

His service ended on 12th October 1921 and he began collecting a pension of 13 and a half pence per day on the 13th.   I wonder what that would have bought in those days?!

I'll see if I can take a look at the London Gazette as I'd forgotten about that part of the entry yesterday.

Thank you (and everyone else) so much for your help.

Well, that wouldn't have gone far and seems quite an insult after 19 years of service, including a war.   I really hope he managed to get another job.
