Researching Gregory family
« on: Friday 18 November 16 18:24 GMT (UK) »
Sam Roberts (born c.1901) was the son of Sam Roberts (c.1859-1908) who married Elizabeth Wragg (c.1863 -?) in Sheffield in 1887.    They had several children

In 1928,  Sam Roberts (1901) married Florence Gregory (born c.1906) in Sheffield.

I have Sam's family history but nothing more about his wife, Florence, other than her name, age and marriage year.

Grateful for help in tracing Florence's parents/family.

but nothing more about his wife, Florence,

The marriage cert should show her fathers name and occupation.  Were either of the witnesses surname Gregory?

You then need to search the 1911 census for her - 1911 lookups are not allowed on Rootschat but you can try FS if you don't have a subscription to any of the other sites

Did you check freebmd?  2 Florence Gregory births in Sheffield - 1905 and 1907

If she died from 1969 onwards her death reg will show her full birthdate

The quickest way is to buy the marriage certificate as Carole says.

If you don't want to do that you can do it by looking at the 1939 Register, then searching the index of births for the birth date that gives (as there are a couple of possibilities) when you have the correct one you can then use the GRO search index to get the mother's maiden name. You can then look up the marriage of Florence's parents from the surnames you now have and will get their forenames. With that you can look her up on the 1911 census and she is with her parents.

Afraid I can not put the details here as we are not allowed to do 1939 Register or 1911 census lookups. However if you have findmypast you will be able to do them, otherwise try your local library as a lot of them have a subscription to findmypast and/or ancestry.

Hope that helps
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hi Gerry...there are roughly 11 Florence Gregorys born In Sheffield around that time frame so the marriage cert is essential, as that will hopefully give her Father's name will help you to go forward with confidence that you have the right family.
