Searching for Jack Randle P/JX.182172
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 15:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to identify Jack Randle (P/JX.182172) who received a Distinguished Service Medal in 1940 for helping with evacuations at Dunkirk aboard the H.M.S Llanthony.

I cannot request his service records because I am not next of kin. It's likely he is no longer living, but I haven't been able to figure out where/when he was born and died etc. Ultimately, I'm hoping to connect with his next of kin. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Not sure if this will help but have you considered his actual name on birth/marriage/death to be John as well as possible variants of Randel/Randell/Randal/Randall or other?

The P/JX will give you some information about his service, P denotes Portsmouth his "home" port.  JX denotes something else. Use google for a table of Royal Navy serial number abbreviation

Hi Annie, Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've considered it, but he was listed in the Gazette under the name "Jack Randle" when he received the DSM, so I'm making the assumption that he used it as his legal name in an effort to narrow my search.

P/JX serials work as follows. As correctly identified, his port of enlistment was Portsmouth. The letter J denotes a technical craft and the letter X denotes a "whole war" enlistment.

Thanks so much RRTB. Unfortunately, that form requires me to send a death certificate with the request unless the person died more than 116 years ago. That's why I'm sort of stuck.
