Hi Sandie,
Can you separate out the James you are referring to, please. Also dates of the marriages, and places if you have them.
In Boreham 1861 census, the only James Digby spotted was a James, age 79, widow, born Braintree and living in Church Lane. Where did you get the births from, a census or certificates? I am happy to do a bit more searching , but it would be easier if you can clarify the family in a tree structure, and as said, when was James (which one) a widow?
Best

I do tend to waffle a bit and make things unclear so will try again!!
I am really trying to find both James Digby's births and marriages but to separate them
1871 census
James Digby age 51 Licensed Victular born Boreham Essex
Jane              age 42                            born Stratford Essex
William           age 20                             ditto
Amelia            age 16                              ditto
Jane                age10                               ditto
ada                 age 6                                ditto
elizabeth         age 5                                ditto
on this census they had moved to Edmonton to the Northern Star.
This James married this wife Jane Stent in 1859 I have the Certificate on this it says he is a Pork Butcher and a widower
I should like to find his 1st marriage  and date of birth if possible.

On this certificate his father also called James Digby is said to be dead I would like if possible to find him.

Hope I am making sense!!
thanks  sandie

Hi Sandie,
Take your pick from these, all in Chelmsford 1841:

Year Quarter Record Type County Volume Page

DIGBY, James 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
DIGBY, Joseph 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
GOOGE, William 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
NEWMAN, Sarah 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
POULTER, Charlotte 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
STOKES, Sarah 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
WAKEFIELD, Susannah 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85
WRIGHT, Samuel 1841 December Marriages Essex 12 85

Also, this looks like them in 1861 indexes:
record census fname lname piece folio parish age born birth
202514 West Ham AMELIA DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 6  1855
202515 West Ham GEORGE DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 14  1847
202516 West Ham HANNAH DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 18  1843
202517 West Ham JAMES DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 43  1818
202518 West Ham JAMES DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 16  1845
202519 West Ham JANE DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 33  1828
202520 West Ham JANE DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 1  1860
202521 West Ham WILLIAM DIGBY 1054 6 WHM 10  1851

More to come, I have just started.

Hi,
The 1861 census image shows them living in West Ham, probably Mount Street - at a Beer House and Butchers shop - the 'Pig and Whistle'. They are all shown as born in Stratford (totally wrong?), and the youngest (Jane)  is aged 1 month.
   Plus two servants.

Hi,
Last for tonight - there are  a few Digby in 1841, in Boreham, but I think your James may have wandered off to get married. Those in Boreham, in 1841, are:
Ann - 20
/
Charlotte - 30
/
James   55
George 20
Sarah        25
/
Charlotte 10

I had a family member allegedly born in Boreham, and eventually tracked her down to Terling, which is close by, i think, as farming families moved about, or these did.
The 1841 marriages suggest a wider browse of the Chelmsford area - good luck.

Hi Kevan,

yes the 1861 is definately the right family, the jane age 1mth is Rons  g Gran I have her Birth certificate

31st March 1861 Jane Elizabeth Digby Chapel Street Stratford Essex.

The Beer & Butchers shop would tie in with him being a master butcher then a Licensed Vitualer.

I have managed to find that the grandaughter Louisa Morgan on the 1881 is Hannahs daughter thanks to your 1861 info.

thanks a lot you have given me some more to work on , I have some more Essex families so !!!!!!!!
all the best  Sandie

Hi Sandie,
I reckon the two marriages in the December 1841 quarter for Chelmsford district will be yours too - you will probably need the certificates, but I would guess James and Joseph are brothers, just a hunch. The certs would give you the exact spouse/s.
I will keep an eye open whilst going anywhere in the Chelmsford 1841 area, in case they pop up, they could be absolutely anywhere!
Glad the info was useful.
Best
