I still believe that Margaret Young was William's first wife so am now looking for her death record, between 1851 (census) and 1856.

I did some look-ups for you some time ago, and found these two baptisms. If this is the same family, Margaret was still alive in 1855  :-\

I found these today, just for the record:

Baptisms both on 18th February 1855 at Holy Trinity Sunderland:

Mary Elizabeth, daughter of William Smith and Margaret, late Young. Born 1st February 1852. Back Grey Street. Father - butcher.

Christian, daughter of William Smith and Margaret, late Young. Born 22nd ?? 1855
Back Grey Street. Father - butcher.

Added: Birth Christiana Smith, 1q 1855, Sunderland 10a, 384

Yes, I had lost track of what you found for me, Jen - my apologies. I am so tangled up and need a friendly genius to sort my mess out!

Given Christiana's date of birth (which, going by the baptism date, has to be January 1855) and John's date of birth, you now have a fairly narrow window within which to find Margaret's death and William's re-marriage  :D

But we are fairly sure that the Margaret Smith death in 1859 ( see earlier quote)  is Christina's mother -  and if that is the case, there must be another William Smith ( butcher) who married Mary Ann Smith in Sunderland before my John was born in 1856. Unless, of course, he was a bigamist!

We know that Christiana's mother's maiden name was Margaret Young. And in your original posting you said that you were sure Margaret Young was William's first wife.

I still believe that Margaret Young was William's first wife

Have you now changed your mind? (my brain hurts  :D )

Yours hurts....imagine how mine feels!

I am going round and round, getting nowhere and arguing with myself, the evidence and everything else!

Added to which, I have just spent ages looking online for William, from Tynemouth, in or near Middlesbrough in 1861. I have the page printed but wanted to be able to refer others to it if necessary. I have now submitted my correction to An*****y, pointing out that Tynemouth is in Northumberland, not North Dakota!

I'm not thinking about it!

But you didn't answer my question in reply #15  :-\
