I posted photos 1 and 3 on Lancaster Past and Present a Facebook site I am a member of (with cristeens' permission) This is one of the replies I have received back:
Photo one - the man with a seamans cap and beard is Tom Spencer (1857 -1935), the man centre with beard is Tom Gardner (1886 - 1952).
Photo two - the man on left is Tom Gardner again, the man on the right with pipe is Arthur Townley (1856 - 1933).
If this information is correct and he seems very positive with his facts, the man in picture one and three are the same, but not the one in picture two. Picture two is Richard Gardner and the date shown is 1857 before Tom was born. I wonder if he could be Tom's father.
Trishanne, thank you. I had come across the Townley name before. My Richard (William Baxter) Gardner was born in 1857, he had a son Thomas in 1886 so that ties in. I wasn't convinced about it being the same person but could see similarities, father and son explains that.
Photo number 2 can't possibly be dated as early as 1857 as paper photography was in its infancy and the format would be different.
Carol
Richard Gardner was born in 1857 Carol. I don't know when the photo was taken but he didn't die until 1940 and was very active until close to the end I am told.
Thank you all for your input.
