Lucinda Cowan
« on: Wednesday 21 December 16 15:32 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information that could provide me with a maiden name for a Lucinda Cowan, wife of Thomas Cowan. They had at least two children Esther (b. about 1853, d. 31/12/1926) and Mary Jane (b. about 1852, d. 13/11/1900). Lucinda Cowan died on 18th March 1885 in Belfast with her last place of residence being 16 Earl Street. She is buried in grave D 416 along with her brother-in-law David Cowan (also living at 16 Earl Street), daughter Mary Jane, son-in-law John Ferris and two great-grand children Joseph and Jane Sweeney. Lucinda Cowan's death certificate states that her husband Thomas was deceased and I know that he was alive in 1875 when daughter Esther married Joseph Sweeney on the 29th March.

The 1901 and 1911 census state that Esther was born in Belfast but the death certificate of her daughter Agnes (Lucinda Cowan's granddaughter) states that her mother was born in Scotland. I have not found any evidence to suggest that this is the case.

Just a possibility, but the 1851 Scotland census shows a 30 year old bricklayer Thomas Cowan and his 28 year old wife Lucinda, 8 year old son Thomas, 4 year old son William and 1 year old daughter Mary Jane, living in Mauchline, Ayrshire.  All were born in Ireland bar Mary Jane, who was born in 'Ayrshire Mauchline'.

Following on from above, another possibility to note, a Thomas Patterson Cowan was baptised on 12 July 1843 in St. Anne's Church of Ireland Belfast, the parents given as Thomas Cowan and Lucy Stewart.

The death record for Thomas's brother David Cowan says that his occupation was a bricklayer. Would this have any relevance?

Potentially, I see from the marriage records for daughters Mary Jane and Esther that 'your' Thomas Cowan was described as a bricklayer in these as well.

I forgot to mention that Lucinda's age was given as 58 on her death record

Saw that, it simply may be understated.  Also to note that a 22 year old Thomas Cowan living in Market Street Belfast married a Hannah Neill on 25 March 1864, again of interest because of the groom's age (indicative birth year) and that his father was recorded as Thomas Cowan, a bricklayer.

Hi,
Need to be wary of some of this information as I can find a record of a Thomas Cowan who married Lucinda Hutchinson. However the marriage took place on 10 Apr 1873 in Seapatrick Church of Ireland, Banbridge, Co. Down.
