Streets of Finedon
« on: Tuesday 27 December 16 08:55 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to rationalise the Victorian census returns for the village of Finedon and translating the street names therein with the present day ones. I have seen the 1884 and 1899 maps which are largely unnamed and am also confused by such references in the earlier returns as NW Street.

I accept this situation isn't unique to this village butu can anyone help?

Many thanks - Alan

Have you studied the lists of streets at the front of the census and tried to match up with what you have got.
I think you will just have to systematically work along the roads labelling and crossing off as you go.

Keep an eye open for areas where the neighbours are the same. If you get a string of people the same in both Censuses, they are unlikely to have all moved house - whatever the street names are called!

Hi "PC"

I'm working on that - it's how I established he n ame changes in Gretton and Cottingham. I've just come across another map from oldmaps.online which does have the NW/NE/SW and SE streets marked.

Now I'm just trying to work out where the main shoe manufacturing sites were in 1881 - 1901

Cheers Alan

Afraid there's no short cuts!

Google Street View can come in handy as well - take some screen shots, might help establish where changes have occurred. There's usually some signs on the ground where something's been knocked down / rebuilt / cuts through to yards behind the main streets been filled in / houses divided.
