Hi Debra
Thank you for the details above. I am baffled by my Great Grand Father, Frederick (DONLAN)

His Army book (in my possession) shows:
1.  Both parents deceased at enlistment (17/5/1884)
2.  Next of kin is George Hopkins, step-brother residing at 2 Clarence Terrace, Fulwell Rd, Teddington, Middx
****************************
HOPKINS, FREDERICK  WILLIAM - Mother's maiden surname: HENDERSON
GRO Reference: 1866  M Quarter in HACKNEY  Volume 01B  Page 396

His Military record (1883) shows him as 19 years old estimated DoB =1864
His Marriage to my Great Grand Mother in 1902 shows him as 35.  DoB estimated to 1867
The record you found could well be him but why is he calling himself DONLAN?
********************************
From enlistment papers. Last permanent residence is 3 Waterloo Street, St Lukes, London where he is a clerk

Baffled!

You need to try and find what became of the children.  I think Alfred is a boarder in Holborn in 1881, dittoed as unmarried after a number of others so probably not reliable.  Did Lucy die or leave?  There is a death in the St Giles district in 1878 for a woman of the correct age.

There were more children to Alfred and Lucy and in 1891/1901 Eleanor Caroline, Alice Mary and Mabel Gertrude (all HOPKINS) are living with Lucy's sister Rachael and her husband Charles MOUSLEY.

They are also there in 1881 with their surname recorded as MOUSLEY.

You need to find out who the boys went to live with.

Debra  :)

George Alfred and his wife Mary are living next door to the MOUSLEYs in 1881.  He married Charles and Rachel's daughter Mary MOUSLEY in 1879.

If Lucy did die in 1878 Frederick would have been 12 and the other boys old enough to be off on their own.

You also need to consider that Frederick may have just changed his name because he got himself into strife at some stage or perhaps he was already married.

Hi Debra, you certainly have set my brain cells into action!
If my Grt Grand Father did start using another name would this be recorded anywhere?
He also has his Father down as DONLAN on the marriage to my Grt Grand Mother in India.
What was he up too!

Hi
I am intrigued and would love to know how you made the connection that Frederick Donlan and George A B Hopkins are half brothers? G A B Hopkins is a direct relative of mine and I have Frederick William as his half brother but have not found any information to link the family to the name Donlan.

What date do you have G A B Hopkins living at 2 Clarence Terrace, Fulwell Rd, Teddington, Middx ? I have him living in Staines from 1879.
