Denight?
« on: Thursday 29 December 16 19:44 GMT (UK) »
Greetyngs alle, I have been att ye Inne and feare mine spellyng shalle suffer greatlye  ;D

Looking through burials at the Clifton Street cemetery in Belfast I came across one Robert Campbell who was buried there in 1857. According to the record he was born in "Denight", County Down, and I can find no such place. I'm thinking it may have been written as it sounds. Some of the Gaelic names are difficult to an untrained ear...any suggestions? Donaghadee perhaps? All suggestions welcome  :)

Cheers,
China

Ooh hello Bally, wouldn't you know it but I can't find the reference again. But my Robert would have to have been born around 1800, maybe a bit earlier, because his son John was born 1827.

There does seem to be a Lisburn connection, Derryaghy Parish actually, but it's from the side of the family that married the Campbell. A Dargan (Dargen), and oddly for an Irish name like that one the family seems to have been Protestant.

Thank you for your help, it's much appreciated.

Well now, how interesting...the Campbells, I think, would be from the Belfast area. John Campbell, whose father is Robert, was born at Peter's Hill in 1827 and may have spent some time near Castlereagh.

But the Dargans were definitely in the Lisburn area at one time because their son Chester was christened in Derriaghy parish in 1822. IGI. Can't find their other two children, or any other children. So...if I can't find the others, and they aren't in the tithe records that you cite, they must have migrated to Belfast shortly after Chester was born. Interesting!

Chester, an unusual name for the times I think. I have a thousand Johns, but just the one Chester  :)

Many thanks, Bally  :)
