Walker/Slight
« on: Sunday 01 January 17 19:19 GMT (UK) »
I have the marriage cert for Joseph Walker & Elizabeth Slight 15th May 1853 in Horkstow.

I have all I need on Joseph but Elizabeth is causing confusion.

Marriage cert state Elizabeth Slight aged 19, spinster of Horkstow, father's name is Sowerby Jacklin a labourer.  Witness' are Samuel Jacklin, George Slight, Martha Elizabeth Walker and Hannah Dinsdale.

Elizabeth is probably the illegitimate daughter of Ann Slight, born 28/9/1834 and baptized 4/1/1835

Logically this means that Ann Slight married Sowerby Jacklin sometime after Elizabeth's birth, but I'm having problems finding the marriage.

Various record show Slight or Sleight and several variations of Sowerby,Sowersby, Sauceby and maybe more.

Any help much appreciated

Not necessarily.  If Sowerby was her biological father - her mother could have married anybody.  No different to today

Thanks Carole, I hadn't thought about it like that.

Re: the 1841 entry above.  Alfred's birth was registered Sept qtr 1840 so I thought I would check for mmn on the GRO website but it's showing entry not found.  In 1851 they have a 9yr old son Walter but his birth wasn't registered

With the age gap between the 2nd & 3rd child, maybe this is a second marriage for Sowerby and the marriage that Geoff-E found could be his 1st marriage.

Please excuse me for not thinking too clearly, I'm starting the new year full of cold.

Familysearch have a baptism for Walter 30/9/1841 Barton on Humber son of Thomas & Maria  ???

On GRO, Alfred's mother's name is given as Barnett which fits with the marriage that Geoff found in Hull.
