My grandfather was a member of the AIF (Australian imperial Forces)
wounded in France and evacuated to the UK.
After he recovered he had two weeks leave before being sent back to the Front.
That would have been the first time he saw anything of the UK.

Some newspaper lists of Australian soldiers report the number of times they were wounded.
Many were wounded more than once -- some three or four times.
I think that it would take real bravery to return to the battlefield after being wounded so often.

Thank you both for your replies,alison300 for the link and phenolpthalein.I am hoping I might find when [if] my grandfather returned to fight again as I read more of the war diary.
I know sometime ago I came across somewhere  on FindMyPast or Ancestry I think, where you could put in a  wounded soldiers name and it would tell you at which hospital they were and the injuries, but I cant find it now!

thank you again

He was wounded at duty Aveluy Wood 14/11/1916 while serving with 5th Batt Pioneers SWB.This information came from the war diary on Ancestry.

I just realised he was wounded at duty which I guess means he may not have been sent to hospital?

Wounded at duty means that he was wounded doing whatever he was doing at the time as opposed to taking part in an assault.
Any working parties did come under artillery fire if they were spotted & within range.
It could also mean he was accidently injured.
The diary should say if they were coming under fire at the time.
I can't see the 5/SWB diary on Ancestry.

When was he wounded ?
Where did the information come from ?

I was not certain Jim if you were asking me or Steve.

The information I provided came from a letter my grandfather sent home from a hospital in Britain after he was wounded in France.
That letter was published in the local newspaper in Australia and is now part of NLA newspapers on Trove.

For privacy reasons will not put it up in full but it says:-
"I got wounded on the 4th February 1917 and was in hospital at Rouen in France until the 11th."
He was then transported to UK and continued writing
"We get a fortnight's leave when we come out of hospital, so I will be able to have a good look round."

Although he was fighting for Britain, this leave would have been the first time he was "able to have a good look round" at any part of Britain. He had not been there before.

The information on how many times soldiers were wounded came from Casualty lists of the war in Australian newspapers.

I have corrected the OCR on several of these. -- The names of such brave men deserve to be easily found by their descendants.

All Australians in World War I were volunteers, most had not been to Britain and many were from small country towns.

I'm not sure how we got from 5/SWB to AIF.
I was answering the poster.
