"The New Zealand Farmer" Magazine
« on: Monday 09 January 17 13:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone assist me please?

I am looking for a copy or copies of the New Zealand Farmer magazine published early in 1955?

In particular an article titled " A Message to Mars - Radio Farm" by author Dorothy Braxton.

Appears to me looking around the internet that this magazine is long out of business or may have develpoed into something else or been renamed.

Any information appreciated.

Yes please !!!!

Attached is a copy of the article that I am seeking.

This is a photo copy of the original article found in the Southland Museum.  I am hoping to obtain a high resolution copy that is suitable for reproducing.  Even with putting the attached copy (in very poor condition) through Photoshop I cannot improve the resolution much.

Unfortunately I cannot be anymore precise with the date of early 1955.  It may possibly also be very late 1954.

The date of the publication has been achieved by looking at the service records of the farm manager Mr George Pollard and the station Superintendent Mr A.W. Wallace who retired on 05.12.1954.  I have a photograph of Pollard (as farm manager) and Wallace together.  Pollard was replaced as farm manager on 21.01.1955, hence the date of this article early 1955.

Also Mr Frank Bemrose in article photograph trimming roses retired in 1954.

Any assistance as always would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Alex G

Hello.

For future reference if Auckland is an easier option for you.

MOTAT Museum’s  WALSH MEMORIAL LIBRARY holds an extensive archive of THE NZ FARMER on site, and normally available to view with minimal wait, for casual visitors to the library. They are the publisher’s hard bound office copies, that were gifted when the publishing office closed.

http://www.motat.org.nz/collection/walsh-memorial-library/

I spent 12 days studying [ 1900 to the 1960’s] issues in 2009, while recovering from surgery.

Parking is good if you park at the Aviation site, and take the Museum’s connecting tram ride to the Main site. Tickets can be obtained at either site reception.

Library staff can photo copy pages of interest or you can take photographs.

While I have been happy to buy an annual subscription, or pay daily adult admission, I believe those undertaking research in the archive, can negotiate more favourable terms, on a case by case basis.

Waikato libraries, [added edit; on the other hand]  like the University and Ruakura, can also hold extensive numbers of issues, but they are held off site, so have to be ordered in for viewing, with up to a weeks notice. All the libraries close to me have publishing gaps, in their archive collection, so enquire about collection gaps, before making a special personal visit.

Thanks to Alan I have discovered that MOTAT in Auckland also hold this magazine in their collection and will supply me a copy of the article on the Awarua Farm.

It will save you another "job" in Wellington.

Please disregard this work on my behalf.

Much appreciate your interest and help.
