Podd - Western Australia ex Plomesgate (Suffolk)
« on: Friday 27 January 17 10:25 GMT (UK) »
Interested in any Australian PODD families from late 1800s onwards, actually.

In particular, Benjamin Horace Podd born in Aldeburgh around 1828 and married about August 1855 in the Plomesgate district to Charlotte Louise COLLIS (1833-1908); we believe Horace died around 1881 and his wife in 1908, still in Plomesgate. Uncertain about their forebears and siblings, though we have names of 5 possible siblings of Horace (Thomas, Jesse, Horace, Margaret, Robert) with birth years from 1824 to 1833, possibly all in Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

Their children: Mary Jane, Margaret, Ernest William, Horace Ernest*, were all born there between 1847 and 1869.

* Harry (Horace Ernest) migrated to Western Australia (? when), lived in New Norcia, Bolgart, and Northam all wheatbelt towns in WA - and died in Northam (28 Jun 1948).

We are more certain of this section - Harry married Mary Ann HALLIGAN who was born in May 1865 in Dublin North, Ireland; they married in New Norcia in 1903. 3 children born in Australia: Thomas Horace was born and died in 1904. Ernest William (Bill) and Margaret (Dolly) were born in 1906 and 1908 respectively.

Mary Ann died in 1945 in 1945. The details about Halligans in Ireland and in WA is patchy, though a lot of family reference is to Summerhill in Meath (with properties around New Norcia named for that Irish locality).

Until these people, I have firm knowledge of those you have found. There are a few Podds listed at the Metro Cemetery Board site that I can't connect to those I have listed (Ernest William b. 1906 and Ivy Jan Elizabeth CARTER b. 1905).

Link can't be followed (NLA - cookie expiry) but it was easily found again with a search - you have the correct person (my father-in-law).
We already have a PDF that service record.
Thanks

Hi,

The Barque, 'Charlotte Padbury', from London, Captain J. Broome, arrived at Fremantle 2nd October 1888 bound for Champion Bay in Western Australia.

One of the passengers was Horace Podd.

This was the first voyage for the 'Charlotte Padbury' to Western Australia.

See "Report of the Charlotte Padbury" bottom of the page RHS.
