« on: Friday 27 January 17 19:29 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone suggest what the place of birth is in the attached part of a will. The will is dated 1593 in London and was originally in French. The testator, John Roussell is known to have been French. In the 4/5th lines it says "I John Roussel borne in the countrie of  Lalon? in ...........?

Hello -

It could possibly be Laleu, which is in the north west of France.

The first of the words looks to be L-a-l-e-u (as craggagh has said).  The last letter could also be an n.

It appears to have a contraction mark over the final letter, indicating an omitted letter or letters, most probably before the final letter.

This much of the word is clear:  L-a-l-e

The second word looks to be:  S-e-l-e-v-e-?-t

Most doubt attaches to the letters after the v.

I would agree with this - and just to say I would interpret the first letter of the next  long word as a "D" so "DELE..."

Thank you all. I now have the place of birth of his wife which is Valenciennes in Flanders, so I am looking in that area. In his will he mentions his nephew Symon Roussell and his place of birth is shown elsewhere as Honfer, which I take to be Honfleur and which is 160 miles from Valenciennes. But none of this seems to help much.

Many thanks again
