Maria CLAPHAM wife of Joshua

Joshua CLAPHAM married Maria WILSON in Wellington in 1865. They had eight children from 1866-1881, but have not been able to find anything on her after that. No death or anything. Joshua died in 1913.

Just wondering if she is the Maria CLAPHAM who married James UPCHURCH in 1914. There is a death of a Maria UPCHURCH on 12 Jun 1918 aged 75. Is this her? Age would fit.

Also trying to find her origins. Where was she born?

In Memoriam notices published in Wellington newspapers tend to suggest Maria UPCHURCH who died 12 June 1918, was probably the former Maria CLAPHAM.

"Evening Post" - - 12 June 1919 - 2 notices = one inserted by her "loving son Joshua".

and "E/Post" - 12 June 1920 = a notice from "her loving husband and daughter*" :

Maria UPCHURCH buried at Karori Cemetery Wellington :   
Her husband James UPCHURCH - died 1924 - shares same plot.

----

James UPCHURCH had remarried in 1921 to a Sarah Jane TAYLOR.
He died intestate in 1924.   In his Probate file (1924) his new wife Sarah Jane states James has a former marriage, with no issue*.

*  So is the "daughter" referred to in the In Memoriam notice of 1920, maybe Helen (CLAPHAM) daughter of Maria

Mmm .. couple of trees relating to CLAPHAM on ancestry ... one has Maria dying later than 1918 (can't recall exact year ?) ... it doesn't though make mention of a marriage to UPCHURCH.

Noticed that service for Maria UPCHURCH (1918) was conducted by WILSON (Funeral Directors).

FD still hold records for burials which go back over 100 years.    You may get lucky with further info for Maria, if you contact FD ?

Thanks, that would seem to confirm it. There were three 'Clapham' children born after Helen, registered as Clapham, but married and died as Upchurch.

The mystery deepens.

Mmm ... a Maria UPCHURCH on Wellington Supplementary No. 2, E/roll - domestic duties - residing at "Riddiford Street"   ... and an Ellen UPCHURCH - d/duties ... same address.

Main Roll - Wellington - 1896 --  James UPCHURCH - carpenter -  Rhodes Street  :   
[ Riddiford and Rhodes Streets are in the suburb of Newtown. ]

CLAPHAM - Joshua* - labourer - Ohariu Valley
[* Am assuming this is Joshua senior and not the son ?   Ohariu Valley was/is, in Northern "suburbs" of Wellington.    A newspaper "for sale" item (9 acres of grass] "Evening Post"  - 7 December 1894 also places Joshua CLAPHAM at Ohariu Valley. ]

Joshua CLAPHAM (90 yrs) died on 13 December 1913 at Wellington.
Funeral notice doesn't mention a wife or his family.

Maria CLAPHAM married James UPCHURCH a mere 2 months later on 9 February 1914.
