With the surname Keenan, there's likely to be an Irish link.

The 1939 entry has (as someone else has said above) a Samuel Keenan b 1880 living in Dartford - without further detail, that already sounds likely to be the right Samuel, as it fits with the suggesgted age and the known part of the country.

The 1911 census shows only 9 Samuel Keenans in England at that time, and none born in 1880 (the closest was 1882) and even allowing some factual flexibility, that would suggest that Samuel may well not have been in England at the time.

So next to check the Irish censuses ---
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Yes that sounds very likely and Dad said he was possibly Irish. I'm not sure how to find Irish registers but will look.
Thank you

The Irish civil registration records have the birth of a Samuel KEENAN registered in Newtownards (Co. Down) in Q1 1880

Although the age is a couple of years off, there was a Samuel KEENAN living in Newtownards in 1911 Census

It seems to be the same date of birth as the man who was living in Kent in 1939. :)

Thank you for your help and advice, it looks as though I may find him with the help I have had on this site. Dad is 83 on Friday, I'd love to tell him something concrete about his father  :)

He seems to have been living in a very leafy part of Kent ... No.22 Ashen Grove Road. The numbers are hard to find, but somewhere around here http://www.instantstreetview.com/@51.338726,0.232913,252.47h,-12.48p,1z
