A married man and his lodger
« on: Monday 30 January 17 06:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello experts,

In 1859 Thomas Burrow & wife Sara Lea (nee Baldwin) migrated to NZ with the first of their kids.
They were married in Kidderminster 1848 according to FreeBMD. Their NZ life is fairly well understood. I am investigating their pre-emigration lives in the UK.

Today I found this conflicting entry for the 1851 census in Family-search.

Name Thomas Burrows
Event Census   1851
Place Blockley, Warwickshire, England
Registration District   Shipston-On-Stour
Male Aged   33 Married
Occupation   Ag Lab
Head of Household
Birth Year c1818
Birthplace   Blockley, Worcestershire
Page Number   36 Registration Number   HO107 Piece/Folio   2076 / 203

Thomas Burrows   Head   M   33   Blockley, Worcestershire
Elizabeth   Wife   F   32   Campden, Gloucestershire
James   Son   M   3   Blockley, Worcestershire
Orlando   Son   M   0   Blockley, Worcestershire
Sarah Baldwin   Lodger   F   23   Blockley, Worcestershire

It suggests Sarah Baldwin was a lodger in this house and Thomas Burrow, the head of the house was married with wife & children I've never heard of. The ages match reasonably well with the ages of my ancestors. Is this just a strange coincidence of names or is there something going on here that warrants investigation?

Cheers
David C

Yes, absolutely, that is a better fit than the one I nominated. Thanks Heywood.

That means that the other family is just a red herring, a rare coincidence of names.

Cheers

I noticed a Tree has no Parents for Thomas..

THOMAS Burrow Christened 2 Nov 1817 Ombersley, Worcestershire
Parents EDWARD/SARAH

Interesting that Sara Lea Baldwins Parents were non-conformist on her London Baptism

We have to be careful now that we know there are two Sarah Baldwins of similar age, both in Worcestershire circa 1851.

Can you be sure that the info you have provided is for 'Sarah Lea Baldwin', who married Thomas Burrow in 1848? I'm trying to remember her birth location.... Ombersley I think.

Baptism in London is interesting. What does that imply?
Also the significance of nonconformist... what should I take from that?

Cheers

Hello,

Sarah Lea was baptised by a Methodist minister so presumably the family were not of the established church, the Church of England - they were Non- Conformists.

There are two records of her baptism - one in the local Kidderminster registers and the same baptism entered into the Methodist registers, London. This seems to be the source of the London confusion.

N C registers are lovely for the detail. This is the wording from the Central registers, London. The local one us the same without the attestation of the parents.

"Sarah Lea Baldwin, the daughter of Enoch Baldwin of Stourport in the parish of Kidderminster ....and of Mary Ann his wife, who was the daughter of  Joseph and Hannah Lowe, was born at Stourport on the Eigteenth day of December in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and twenty five
At whose birth we were present, Mary Baldwin and Martha Weaver.
The first above mentioned, Sarah Lea was solemnly baptised .... On the twentieth day of March (1826) at her father's house by me James Heaton."
The parents then attest the truth of this.

Trish has the right parents there for you.
