Wright Cooper, Guide Bridge until 1921
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 19:16 GMT (UK) »
I know a fair bit about Wright up to and including his death in 1921.  I need to know about his son John Cooper, born 1893.  In 1911 he lived with his parents at 70 Birch Street.  By 1921 he was at 42 Hamilton Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, just a few blocks from his parents.  Did John get married?  If so where, when and to whom?  There is nothing at St. Stephen's, Guide Bridge - their local church.  In 1917 Wright penned a series of articles for the local newspaper in which it is mentioned that he owned an impressive archive of his native village - Broadbottom.  Would I like to get  my hands on that!

Thanks Heather Julie,

He was simply Wright.  Born in 1863 in Mottram (Broadbottom, actually); married Martha Sidebottom in 1883.  I have everything I need about Wright but his son John is the one who is eluding me.  (I don't have Ancestry or any other FH subscription).

I found a John Cooper living on Stamford Road, Audenshaw, but I have no idea whether this is the correct one.  It is quite possible because John played cricket and was secretary for Ashton Trafalgar C.C. whose ground was located at Roker Park in that vicinity.

The free search on the 1939 register (I dont have a current sub either) shows a John Cooper born c. 1892 living in Audenshaw. There is also a Lilian Cooper at that address and one other person whose record is closed.
There is a marriage on Cheshire BMDs in 1914, John Cooper to Lilian Wild, register office/registrar attended.

Cheshire BMDs also have births for four children with surname Cooper, mother's maiden surname Wild, in the Ashton area. One of them is a boy with the middle name Wright (born 1921 so could still be alive). Could be a coincidence, but then again might be worth following up.

Flying Officer Herbert Wright Cooper died in WW2. His CWGC record states "Son of John and Lilian Cooper, of Bispham, Blackpool, Lancashire."

I went to Tameside Archives in Ashton-under-Lyne this morning.  The 1914 marriage appears to have been in Ashton Register Office.  On the way home I called in at Dukinfield R.O. (from where they now issue all Tameside certificates) and ordered the 1914 certificate, subject to the groom's father being Wright.  I think Lilian Wild's father's name was Herbert.  The christian names of the deceased Pilot Officer in 1944 are Herbert Wright.  Is this too much of a coincidence?  My only question mark is the Blackpool connection.  Let's see what the 1914 certificate says when I pick it up tomorrow.

Thank you so far Heather and Barbara.

I just looked up those four births from 1912 - 1921. They look promising.  How would I find out the address John and Lilian in Bispham in 1944?
