Cooke Puzzle
« on: Wednesday 08 February 17 13:57 GMT (UK) »
Hoping someone can help here with a small puzzle. Would someone be able to look at the attached extract from a Will I've obtained and work out what tge  the wife's name is please. This is the Will of Edward Cook of Wychling, Kent and I have a different wife on my notes.

I know Edward had 3 children born in Wychling - Sibbell (1598), Henry (1599/1600) and Edward (1603).

The puzzle is that according to their christening records the mother was named Bennett, however on this Will the wife's name looks like Alice. The Will was made in 1612 (I believe) and so could Bennett have died and Edward remarried? That would account for the other two children (James and John) named in the Will. Of course this Edward might be the father of the Edward who married Bennett but so far I've not found any marriages or other clues.

If anyone is able to confirm what the extract says or can check the PR for Wychling for any other clues I'd be very grateful.

Thank
Matt

The East Kent Marriage Index has a Marriage at Wychling as follows,

1611 Jul 29 Edward COOK Alice RICHARDSON (Widow)

Edward's status is not mentioned.

May be of some help.

Hi

Thanks for that info. I also found the same on Ancestry and on several trees on the site which show Edward marrying Benett in c1598 and then Alice on the date you have. If I could find Bennett's burial or Edward and Bennett's marriage it would be helpful.

Also if I could find a Will for Edward's sons Edward, John or James which mention Sibbell or Robert Brenchley I could establish a connection.

More digging required I think.

Thanks again

Matt

Hi Claire

Many thanks for that info. At last the pieces are falling into place. Edward was married twice as I suspected, first to Bennett and then to Alice. It would be interesting to find the burials for Edward and Alice too.

Anyhow my next step is to try and trace Edward and Bennett back another generation. I'd also like to see if I can find any children for his marriage to Alice.

Anyhow many thanks again.

Matt

Hi

Do you think it's possible the first Henry died, as there is this

Henricus son of Edwardi bpt. 3 April 1609

Can't see baptisms for either a John or James.

Can't see a burial for Edward at all, but Alice transcribed as Allen was there,

Allice Cooke widdowe was buried 26 February 1640 Wychling St Margaret.

Would you like  the images put up for your records ?
