Brighton hospital death - local knowledge needed
« on: Monday 13 February 17 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I am investigating the death of William Chester in 1884.

William's death was registered in the Sussex County Hospital, Brighton on 29 August 1884.

William was 26 years old and the cause of death was Sclerosis (cirrhosis) of the liver.

William was originally from Yorkshire, but had lived in London most of his life. He was employed as a barman in 1881 (perhaps explaining the sclerosis).

William had no obvious or known links to Brighton.

My questions are this - did William go to Brighton because he would be able to get specialist treatment in the hospital? In London he lived only a stones throw from St Thomas' Hospital so why not go there?

Alternatively, it is clear that William knew he was going to die, he made his will on 5 August (in London) might he have just travelled to Brighton for the final stages of his illness - perhaps to take the air - and been admitted to the Sussex hospital just for the end game?

Also does anybody know where he might have been buried. I think it unlikely that anyone would have brought him back to London so my guess is he lies somewhere in the Brighton area. Does anyone know where I might look?

I have tried to find answers to these questions on line but have not managed, so I hope that someone with a little local knowledge might be able to help.

Thanks

Robert

I doubt very much if he would have been referred to a Brighton hospital from London, especially in those days.

This site looks as if they deal with burial queries in Brighton, but they do charge!

Thanks Groom,

I think you are probably right. My guess is he went to Brighton for the sea air, in the hope it might do him some good.

Thanks for the weblink.

I'd suggest searching for historical burials Brighton and in the results list should be a result titled 'Family history research of burial and cremation records' - that will take you to Bright and Hove City Council's page which tells you haw to obtain information on burials and cremations.
It looks that by 1884 all burials were in one of the cemeteries run by this Council.

I tried pasting the link but could only get part of it for some reason.

Search cost bit pricey but I think they will supply a map giving burial location.

Is that the same link I gave?

Thank you Artifis

The cost is a bit off putting! Also I live about 300 miles from Brighton so visiting the graveside won't be happening any time soon!  :-\ Thanks very much for the help.

Hello Landyman,

I suggest you give Brighton and Hove City Council a call and see how you get on with a query on the burial. I did just that for some of my ancestors and they gave me the details with no mention of a charge. I think it is best to just ask and not say anything about family history, genealogy. It is worth a try, they can only say no, or attempt to extract a fee.

Jo.
