Sidney Ellis. Mariner Apprentice
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 10:40 GMT (UK) »
I came across a Sidney Ellis aged 14 being bound as an apprentice on a ship PATRIOT at Liverpool in 1849.Where might I find more about this Sidney such as dob & place , parent etc. for Sidney Ellis is by no means an uncommon name and I don't want to jump to conclusions? Many thanks for any help. Toby.

There a seaman's ticket record in BT113 for apprentice Sidney Ellis born Holywell, Flint on 10 December 1834.

Ticket issued at Liverpool in May 1849

Brown hair, blue eyes, ruddy complexion, can write.

I cannot believe it ShaunJ. The very Sidney I am looking for, without any doubt.
Can you tell me if these details are to be seen anywhere on line?
Many, many thanks.

Yes, the images are on FindMyPast. Go to the A-Z of record sets, type Seamen in the box, and you'll find the right place to hunt him down.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

1841 census has him with Mary Ellis / Martha Ellis and Enna Marsden - do any of these fit the Sidney you are looking for ?

It is indeed the same Sidney, Garstonite. He moved to Cardiff after Holywell and then, like many from Wales, went to work in the GWR in Swindon. T
