Request for Location of Ancestors Home-Re: Valuation Records
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 22:53 GMT (UK) »
My 2x Great Grandfather  had a home in the Town land of Creevy, District of Banbridge, Electoral Division of Glaskermore back in 1879-1914.  He was not on Griffiths Valuation.  In the valuation records from PRONI it says Ordinance 34, 41 and the house was on lot 4A and his name was Isaac Fergus. When I try to find this area on the maps I see several "4's" but I don't know which area is correct.

I was hoping somebody could just advise me where this property was according to modern roads, so I could find it that way.

My second request for help is that in 1914 the family moved to a farm at 51 Doughery Road, which is about a mile south of Banbridge. The road runs off Rathfriland Road and once on Doughery Road it ends at Ballynanny Road. I was hoping to find out what that area on Dougher Road would be but again I can't understand the maps from the past. Just trying to see who was in the family farm, prior to 1914.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Susan Graham

Going by the Valuation Revision books, Isaac seems to have taken over the property of a Robert Arnott in 1918, so possibly:

The way I use Griffiths valuation starts with the map reference So I look up the Griffiths valuation at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.   under Creevy without anything else, and find immediately two such named townlands concentrating on Creevy in the parish of Aghaderg. use the search engine on Griffiths under ‘details” apage opens of the printed version showing under creevy page 55 it has map references on the LH Column of yhe page
4 a Francis M McCullagh Ho office and land. Land 43 acres, house valued at £2 pa
4 b Samuel Lyons4b sub leased from Francis House and small garden, house valued at 15shillingspa  valuation
4 c Anne Grealton  also subleased from Francis House and small garden £1 pa

now I go to PRONI and look up https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/valuation-revision-books
up comes a table
PLACE NAME   URBAN   TOWNLAND   PARISH   COUNTY   DATE FROM   DATE TO   PRONI REFERENCE
Creevy   Aghaderg   Down   1864   1878   Current PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/16/14A (1864 - 1878)
Creevy   Aghaderg   Down   1879   1889   Current PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/16/14B (1879 - 1889)
Creevy   Aghaderg   Down   1890   1908   Current PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/16/14C (1890 - 1908)
Creevy   Aghaderg   Down   1909   1923   Current PRONI Reference: VAL/12/B/16/14D (1909 - 1923)
Creevy   Aghaderg   Down   1921   1930
I click on  the ref ending with B
I click on Next Creevy is in an index list marked 52
I go to Forward 10 images and click 6 times watching the page number handwritten top RH corner I am now at p 52 which is the end of the previous townland , so I now click Next and find its been cancelled and not referred to another page number and continuing to the end of of Creevy on p57 I go back and find a LH page that is neatly written with Isaac at 4A but no date as to when he took over the blg. so I stop and jump to the book C and find the index page giving P56 I click forward 6 times anfd find myself on p59 ie properties 14 onwards I go back page by page and find renumbering has taken place 4 is the 43 acres of Francis but without any building and now 4a is the building worth £2pa and lived in by Isaac.  that’s exciting its a big change in housing

Next I go looking at the OS map itself ie OS 6” Ist series Ist revision printed about 1860 that is all part of the www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation I look up Francis McCullagh of Creevy and then look across the headings and find map and two icons , I always use the larger one
Now I open a map  However I cheat slightly, I go to Ros Davies website and look up her map of Aghaderg townlands In the southern half of the parish Creevy runs to the border of the next parish Now knowing roughly the shape of the townland and the name of the townlands surrounding it back I go to OS map on askabout Ireland. The art is finding the townland it is labelled but not easy to spot.
I find Creevy townland and realize map ref 4 is bordering the north of the townland I spot b in the LH Corner and c and perhaps an a.   Francis farm is sizable but the house valued at £2 is not obvious to me on a modern google map. Along the top rhs corner is a sliding scale that changes the view to modern times Plot 4 is about 200 feet South of an advert for
L Harshaw Cattle breeders 13 Annaghbane Rd Banbridge BT32 3NU on the goggle map a white block is to be seen, switching to Satelite it is a house with drive. I switch again to Street view and go up and down a road but cannot select the right house which should be visible among several possibles.

useing the last of the current PRONI books , I thing fergus is still listed in 1823/28 in Creevy!

So I end with suggesting perhaps you write to L Harshaw with SAE.

Thank you so much for once again helping me!!! I have reviewed the Valuation books on line but not with the understanding that you have provided me. I am going to retrace your steps to "get it in my head".
When you mentioned that PRONI books may list Fergus as listed in Creevy from 1823/1828 is that something I can view on-line? I only see valuation records starting at 1864 up to 1923.

Also to fully understand correctly, is 13 Annaghbane Rd Banbridge the area in today times, where Isaac Fergus lived back then and you just weren't sure what house was the one when looking at satellite? Sorry just trying to absorb this information as I so very much want to visit when i come over to Ireland next year. Thank you!!!!

Now I can finally actually stand on the land they lived many years ago with my son. We plan to fly over next summer and this is going to be a great adventure for us.
