St Mary Bourne baptism 1818 Henry COWDERY
« on: Thursday 23 February 17 09:28 GMT (UK) »
I would be so very grateful if someone has access to the register (or a fuller transcription) to confirm the details given in the Hants GS transcription (via FindMyPast).

The entry is the baptism of Henry COWDERY of Stoke at St Mary Bourne on 2 Feb 1818 son of William and Harriet.

I would particularly like to check the surname spelling and, most importantly, the father's occupation.

I'm hoping this is the end of a 15 year search for my 3xgreat grandfather's baptism !

There is a Henry Cowdry born St Mary Bourne on FreeREG - baptised 2/1/1811 parents John and Sarah. Different parents, but don't know if you know the ones you mentioned are the correct ones or not. St Mary Bourne is a very small village, so probably the same family.
regards.

Henry CORDEROY appears in the census with the following details:

1841    aged 20   born not in Berkshire  suggests born 1817-21
1851    33   Stoke HAM    1817-18
1861    41   Uxbridge       1819-20
1871    52   Stoke HAM    1818-19
1881    63   Newbury BRK 1817-18
1891    75   Newbury BRK 1815-16
His death certificate of Dec 1897 gives age as 80 suggesting 1816-17

So this is why I favour the 1818 baptism.

1861 seems to be the year of confused birthplaces . Henry's sister Clara (married a Dowling) always gave her birthplace as Greenham or Crookham BRK (which matches her baptism) but in 1861 she gave Stoke HAM. Why did Henry give Uxbridge in 1861? His younger brother Joseph was baptised in West Drayton MDX and usually gave Middlesex as his census birthplace.

The parents of Clara, Joseph, and a fourth child William Thomas, were William and Harriet - which matches the 1818 baptism.

I've just received a copy of the 1818 baptism entry from Hants Record Office.

In the baptisms of William and Harriet's other three children, the father's occupation is given as "miller".

When they married, Henry Corderoy (1840 & 1850) and Joseph Timbrel Corderoy (1844) gave their father's occupation as "miller".

Henry's baptism at St Mary Bourne describes his father as a "miller"  ;D

This now links me into the Corderoys of Blewbury BRK

Many thanks to those who replied . This look-up is now successfully completed.
