Barrie - Larbert
« on: Wednesday 27 July 05 16:45 BST (UK) »
Hi, my g/g/grandmother was Helen Barrie.  She married Robert Allardice from Kirriemuir in Angus. She was born about 1828/29 according to the 1881 census for Glamis, as she was 52, and she was born in Larbert Stirling. Can anyone give me any further info on her please? Thanks  ... Sheila

Hello Sheila,

I had a look at the BVRs but couldn't find Helen. The dates I entered were 1829 +/- 5 years and found the following births:

BARRIE, William   Bir   1826   Scot   Stir   Larber
Fa:   William BARRIE
Mo:   Mary TAYLOR

BARRIE, James   Bir   1828   Scot   Stir   Larber
Fa:   William BARRIE
Mo:   Mary TAYLOR

BARRIE, Margaret   Bir   1830   Scot   Stir   Larber
Fa:   William BARRIE
Mo:   Mary TAYLOR

BARRIE, Agnes   Bir   1832   Scot   Stir   Larber
Fa:   William BARRIE
Mo:   Mary TAYLOR

BARRIE, Margaret Dobbie   Bir   1832   Scot   Stir   Larber
Fa:   George BARRIE
Mo:   Joan BLAIKIE

If any of the above are likely candidates, let me know as there is more info on each individual available.

Anne

Thanks for looking that up Anne. Crawfordjohn is a long way from Larbert. I couldnt find  Avondale on my map, but as it is also in Lanark, I guess it is probably too far away as well. I've been looking at the names of the children of Robert and Helen to see if I could get any clues, but I don't think it helps any.  Their children were  Betsy,John,George,Duncan Milne Allardice, Robert,James,Charles,Isabella, Jessie Mill, and Helen. Roberts father was William, but there is no child William, so they dont appear to have stuck to the old naming pattern. I havent been able to find their marriage yet either, but Betsy was born in 1848 in Kirriemuir,Angus. Helen would only have been about 20 then. Do you know if those two were the only Barrie families in Larbert at  that time? Thanks for the info .... Sheila

As far as I can tell they were the only families with children born in Larbert.

Have you tried the OPR's? They might be your next step.

I did find a burial in Larbert Churchyard for George Barrie & Joan Blackie (the stone has the date of 1848 on it). That will be the couple last on the list on my first message. So if you ever 'adopt' them, I can pop along to the Graveyard and try and get a photo for you. These were the only Barries listed in the pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

Anne

Thanks Anne, We dont have a family history centre here , but I wonder if the library would have anything. I'm more inclined to go for George and Joan, because the other couple had a regular two year gap in their children 1826, 1828, 1830, 1832. If George and Joan are the parents then it looks like both or one at least of them died about the same time that Helen had her first child in 1848 when she was about 20. On the other hand Helen might have been born in Larbert but her parents may just have been visiting! The other Barries may be relatives! Oh dear! Do you know any good detectives?!!!!!  If you do decide to go to the graveyard let me know, it may just throw up a few clues even just one clue would be fine! Sheila
