European Research outside Great Britian

Sorry if this is in the wrong place on the board first off I am not sure where to post it exactly.

I noticed on the board here you list England, Scotland, Ireland area but nothing for the main part of Europe.  Is there just not a demand for it or is the board specifically more for the USA/Great Britian area?

I am just curious as some of my lines come from areas such as Germany, Poland, Italy, France, and Sweden (as well as England, Scotland, and Wales).

I'd love to learn more about doing research in Europe if that is possible.

We started RootsChat just to concentrate on England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. 

We added the Immigrant and Emmigrant section which looks at people who either came or left from the Uk.  If your questions regarding Madeira, Germany and Poland etc are connected with immigration or emmigration this is the best place to post your question.

There are currently a huge array of sites covering research in the USA, but very few which cover the Uk.

It seems there are entirely too few sites that deal with genealogy outside of the USA, even Canada seems to have less.  I thought since I was living in Europe now that it would be easier to start tracing some of those foreign roots.

Most of my family I have no idea where they left Europe and came to the USA from.  Some I don't even know more than an approximate date for when they came (mostly the information I have for emigration is from census records).

But this site will still be good because I did have some family that came over from Scotland and Wales (does this site deal with Wales too?).  And we know somewhere there is some English blood too.

Yes Wales is included on this board, I have asked lots of questions  (especially look-ups) and have had some great help in tracking  down my Welsh ancestors
Wales is listed separately, and then by County, but for Census look ups I post on that specific board. But you can post in both!

I am also researching in Europe:  Austria, Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Germany, ... and probably other countries as I found out more.

I have collected a lot of useful links, which I would be happy to pass on, but, WHERE ?

To this end, I would like to ask RootsChat:

Would it be possible / sensible / wished for to start a new board for Non-UK European Research.  ??

Maybe just a "useful links" type board, to start with, rather than "look up requests".

What do others think ?

I know that The Netherlands is slowly putting all of their information on-line in a huge database (old marriages, births and deaths).  Right now there is a fair bit of information but not much if you think of the time span it covers.  Perhaps other countries are doing something like this as well?

I think having a section for "Other Countries" or "Rest of Europe" would be nice to see but I don't know what the entent of the board was.  Perhaps it was only ever ment to be for Great Britian? 

I know there are rumors though in my family that my Swedish and French lines both moved to the England area before crossing over into the USA.  A board for the rest of europe could be a nice little starting point for something like that if others have had the same thing.  Then it could all be right here in one place.

Having French, Dutch and German relatives in my tree as far back as 1650 and been living abroad for many years, I wish I had known at the time 
Certainly Huguenot immigrants and captured French matelots (sailors) from Trafalgar who then settled. So, sometimes their history can be even more intriguing and exciting.
Indeed it would be useful to have another countries section concerning mainly European hyperlinks. I think expanding for the old empire (inc USA)might also be interesting, but a bit out of scope. That would be useful (for me) for India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada...USA is so well covered that the existing immigrant/emmigrant section will do.

If anyone needs any (small) help with translation please let me know. If I can't help I always have multi-lingual friends who can, especially for France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Belgium/Netherlands.

I think that if you go far enough back all of us have some foreign blood.

That is where the research can get very difficult,  RootsWeb is the best place I have found for starting off my Norwegian research.
