Dating Grampa Heap
« on: Wednesday 15 March 17 17:53 GMT (UK) »
This photo was identified on the back as Grampa Heap but which Grampa?
From his clothing could someone give me an idea of timeframe?
It should be either John Heap 1846-1928 Derby or his father Samuel Heap 1806-1887 Derby

I would be inclined towards the first option....is there anything on the back..is it a postcard?

John Heap (1846-1928) had sons who emigrated to Canada and others who stayed in England.  This photo was from a descendant of one of the sons who remained in the Silkstone area.  I received it as a copy and there was never any mention that it had any information on the back other than the caption.

I have been browsing clothing styles online and could not come to any opinion.  Am I correct in thinking this man is extremely short and his suit coat should not be quite as long except for the factor of his height?

I can't help with the fashion question but the photograph appears to be a family 'snap-shot'. If the image is full and un-cropped, It was more than likely an enprint from a two and a quarter inch, square negative, which came to the masses at the commencement of the Edwardian era. This would make the subject 55+ which works for me.

I agree it's a snapshot making it the first chap.
He's dressed formally so the clothing doesn't help with a date.

I agree with that era too and I don't think he is particularly short, it's just that his legs are chopped off in the photo so you can't see the length of his shins!

I was having difficulty resizing photos the other day.  Hopefully this is a better one.
