Black Hill Cemetery , The Old Church Yard
« on: Friday 17 March 17 11:56 GMT (UK) »
I have located details of my Wife,s Grandfather,s burial in 1934 in the Black Hill Cemetery . He was buried in a Paupers grave in Section C , Grave 149 .

John Cameron 1896-1934

As it was a Pauper,s Grave , I assume the grave will be unmarked but is there a Plan/Map of the Graves in the Cemetery so the location of the Grave can be found .

There is a Burial Record for James Cameron, Labourer, aged 39 years, of 37 Priestmans Avenue, Consett who was buried on June 9th. 1934 in Section C of the old cemetery in grave no. 149.
There is no indication in the Burial Record that it was a pauper's burial, and a Minister was in attendance.
This grave is not unique in not having a headstone; the missing headstone does not necessarily denote a pauper's burial - more likely a shortage of cash in the family. I do not have the figures to hand at the moment, but the majority of graves from the early years of the cemetery do not have headstones. Putting food on the table would be more important.
There is an information board on the wall outside the cemetery with contact details to talk to the people on the local Council who can mark the grave for you.

I've just found the phone number for the appropriate Council department - Bereavement Services, 03000 265609. Ring them with the details shown above and they will put a named marker on the plot. There is a plan on the wall at the entrance to the Old (South) cemetery which will show you where Section C is.
