Rachael or Rebecca Taylor? The wife of Francis Farmer of Mayfield
« on: Saturday 18 March 17 21:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I've been struggling with this one for years so I thought I'd have a try here. If anyone can solve it you get a virtual box of the finest chocolates!

Francis Farmer (b1769 Mayfield) married his second wife Rebecca Taylor on 25 Feb 1800 in Mayfield. She was of the parish of Ashbourne, Derby. I think she may have had a daughter Elizabeth illegitimately in 1796 in Ashbourne. The first three children of the marriage are born to Francis and Rebecca from 1800-1804, but the subsequent five children are born between 1806 to 1820 to Francis and Rachael. Mayfield PR's are on Find My Past so I have seen the original registers. There is no third marriage with Rachael. I am working on the assumption Rebecca and Rachael are the same, but why the name change? I don't want to get this all wrong and mess up my tree but for now I am treating them as separate individuals. I have looked extensively for Rebecca or Rachael amongst the Taylors living in the vicinity but there are none. There were Taylor's living near Mayfield in Calton who had come from Matlock originally via Dethick in Ashover (Peter and Mary and family, who appear in the Mayfield registers from 1786), and several in Ashbourne as well. I can't link any of them to a Rachael or a Rebecca.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to have a look. I'd much appreciate anything!

Kells.

Hello
I had a look for a burial for the wife/wives
Rachel Farmer age 79 buried Mayfield 25.9.1843 so born 1773.

But there is no Rebecca.

The nearest baptism is a Racheal Taylor d of Isaac at Alfreton 7.7.1779 which isn't a great fit at all.

It doesn't look like a gravestone has survived for either Francis or Racheal but his first wife has for Elizabeth Farmer w o Francis Farmer 5.1.1797 age 25.
Next to it is a Margaret Farmer age 25 9.11.1824 and Sarah age 2 years 28.5.1822.

Sorry it's not a lot

Hi ciderdrinker,

Thanks for having a go. I have Rachael's burial and she's in the 1841 census (the age there puts her at circa 1773 but age at death could be more accurate). No clues, unfortunately, apart from the not born in county (Staffordshire) indication.

I followed the line for Rachael daughter of Isaac, but she died. None of the Rachael's or Rebecca's I have found, and there are not many, have lead anywhere.

Thanks again :)
