All the references to him, via Mr G, do not give him a Knighthood -

Photograph in the National Portrait Gallery - London
Nigeria - Echoes of a Century - page 140
Supplement to the London Gazette - 2 January 1939 - but can't see the heading as it is on the previous page  :'(
Regio Oriental de Nigeria

I've also found the account of his marriage, and the death of a daughter - I'll send them by e-mail.

And I found this RC thread

Thanks for that.

I am beginning to think that the grave transcriber made an assumption that he was a Sir because of the CMG after his name.  I also found no reference to a Knighthood but not knowing how these things work wasn't completely sure.

Not sure if that RC thread is a relative, cousin is checking into the pedigree. ;) :D

Thanks for those clippings.

No wonder my dear old granny thought his son was such a good catch for her daughter ::) ;D ;D

His being made a Companion is listed, along with those made Knights, OBEs etc, in the 2nd Jan 1939 edition of Yorkshire Post (and no doubt other papers too). So, presumably, the 'New Years Honours' list.
