John Maguire service number, help needed.
« on: Thursday 23 March 17 23:14 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,
I am trying to find my grand uncles WW1 military service record.  I need to find his service number and regiment before I can apply for his records.
His details are,
John Maguire.
Date of Birth was 1st May 1884.
Place of Birth was Shuttle Hill, Coleraine.
Fathers name was Robert Maguire.
Mothers name was Jane Maguire (Nee McDonnell).
The story in the family is that he lost his hearing due to operating heavy artillery during WW1 and he didn't marry.
Not much to go on and that's the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unless he continued to serve after 1920, if they survive, his records should be on Ancestry and Findmypast. Nearly 70% of WW1 records were lost in WW2.

An unsuccessful search though the surviving records on those sites would seem to confirm, as Jebber has said, that his detailed records were among the 70% that were destroyed. There are a number of medal cards for John Maguires who served in one or other of the branches of the Royal Artillery but these do not have identifying information.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thanks for that Max D.  I was able to find his brother who served in both the Boer war and WW1.
We were able to find his service number by checking for his name appearing in the records for both wars.
In the case of John who was too young to join for the Boer War, we have even less to go on.
Thanks again.
