Army medical fitness eyesight 1950s
« on: Saturday 25 March 17 21:04 GMT (UK) »
I am researching an army officer who served in the Royal Engineers, especially Mil Survey, from 1951-1959. His PULHEES medical record indicates that throughout his service he was graded 2 for all the main categories except eyesight where he was given grade 1 for one eye and 5 for the other. I am not sure whether 5 was the worst category then - now it is 8 - but clearly 5 was very bad, and I know that he had a glass eye later (in the 1960s). Either way, his PES throughout his service was "FE" (Forward Everywhere), which I believe meant that he could be employed anywhere including front line combat. My question is whether someone with poor or non-existent eyesight in one eye would normally have been given FE. I believe they wouldn't now.
