COLES of Pennington
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 10:41 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I am working on the assumption that John and Sarah COLES had at least three children baptised in Pennington: Stargos 07/10/1784, Carmi 15/04/1785 and Comfort 24/02/1788.

We have knowledge of Carmi's marriages and children but nothing of his (assumed) parents or siblings. With such distinct names, something must pop up!

Can anyone help, please?

Regards

Hi
Sarah 8.8.1790 At Milford  d of John and Sarah Coles
Another son Thomas 25.6.1793 at Pennington
William 10.8.1795 at Milford to John and Sarah Coles
Jan daughter 12.11.1797 Milford d of John and Sarah Coals
Maria 2.3.1800 at Milford d of John and Sarah Coles.

And if John is from Milford perhaps this is their marriage there.
John Coles and Sarah Hills 13.3.1783.

Possible baptism at Milford for Sarah Jacob Hills 3 Jan 1758 d of Robert Hills

The problem seems to be that neither Pennington or Milford is easily accessible on-line.

There's a burial for John Coals senior at Milford 29.9.1782 who I presume is John's father.
Mary d of Jno Cole 13.5.1770 Milford
Burial John Cole 1748 -22.3.1820 Milford
Burial Sarah Coles 1760- 28.10.1807 Milford

Forgive me I don't know the area well enough to know more about Pennington and Milford.
ps there's an apprenticeship for Carmi Coles 1804 to James Ingram of Lymington carpenter, but no mention of father.

Marriages at Milford
Comfort Coles 8.12.1814 Stephen Hookey
Jane Coles 25.12.1826 William Stote

Maria Coles burial 20.7.1823 age 23 Milford.

Apparently Pennington was in the parish of Milford so perhaps that's why they are in two places at once.
Hampshire has a Will for Richard Coles yeoman of Pennington Milford for 1807 which may be worth sending for.

There's no more details of Thomas's Will on line, and Robert left a Admin 4.9.1792 Robert Hills labourer of Milford to widow Jane which is at Hampshire archives.Burial 17.1.1787 though so she took her time.( I haven't see the original so no more details).
No sign of a burial or remarriage in the parish for Jane.

An line tree on Ancestry has his birth at Portsmouth 16.11.1729 to John and Elizabeth which is from Familysearch but obviously Robert Hill/s is quite a common name.It also gives Jane as Jane Jacobs but no marriage date.

Hope that helps

Amazing!  Thank you, ciderdrinker.

Sadly nothing to connect the Hills to the Coles.  I'll keep digging.
