Shoreditch Cottrell Help
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 04:21 BST (UK) »
Hope I've posted this on the correct page as I'm not very good at using this site. Looking for a birth for my Great x3 Grandfather and his parents. His name was Thomas Cottrell and was born in Shoreditch abt 1844 he moved up to South Shields when he married his wife Isabella Maddison in St Hilda's. I have their marriage certificate but can't find a birth for him or find his parents anywhere. I know from his marriage certificate his father was called William (a mariner) but that's all we know. I've tried looking on various websites for his birth in shoreditch and his parents but haven't had any success. Can anyone help me please? I'd be very grateful. Thank you in advance.

I never thought of that but it William was at Sea would his family be too? Thomas would have been about 6/7 in 1851 and I can't see him on a census earlier than about 1871/1881 I think. It's absolutely been driving me mad. My mama been looking for 17 years and nothing so I thought I'd give it a go. I can't even seam to find a marriage for William either but he may not have been married in Shoreditch I'm just presuming as that's where Thomas was born.

It's possible that the family were at sea with William but I would have thought unlikely  :-\  There is always the possibility that Thomas was illegitimate or he changed this name ??  I can't see a birth that matches him.

Who were the witnesses at his wedding? I presume they aren't relations.   I can see why this is driving  you mad

I'm not sure on witnesses-I'll have to get certificate from my mam. I can't even find a baptism entry for him. Thomas married. Xx

Like you I can't see him either pre his marriage.  He may well have been at sea and working in 1861 but there is no sign of him in 1851  :-\
