Dewsbury cemetery lookup 1884
« on: Monday 08 May 17 19:09 BST (UK) »
Hi, is it possible for anyone who is going to the Dewsbury Library to do a lookup for me please regarding a burial in Dewsbury cemetery 1884. My e-mails and telephone calls are unanswered so I assume they are very busy.
The person concerned was my Great Grandfather and I have been trying to locate a burial place for him. His name was ADAM SAVILLE and he died in Dewsbury on October 6, 1884.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you, Andrew.

His death was registered in the Huddersfield RD not Dewsbury RD.  Why do you think he is buried in Dewsbury?

You are quite correct. Having searched every municipal and church cemeteries including non comformist ones in the Huddersfield area including I might add those of Heckmondwike, and Batley which were other possibilities as his spouse moved to those areas following his death the only possibility left to me is that of Dewsbury cemetery. This is purely based on the assumption he could have ended up there. As there is nothing related to his burial in the local papers only his death I am clutching at straws. I simply want to be able to know is he in Dewsbury cemetery or not.
Regards.
Ps, His death occurred at the Goods Yard, L&NW Railway Dewsbury.

He's not buried at Dewsbury Cemetery, I'm afraid.

Hi

Have you looked at the papers. If he died at the Goods Yard he might of had an inquest, also the paper might say where he was being buried.
Do you know where they where living at the time of the death that could help narrow the burial down otherwise you have several graveyards/cemeteries to look in on the outskirts of Huddersfield & Dewsbury.

Hi John, yes there was an inquest but no burial details were given. He was a carter who delivered and collected goods from various locations at the time of death. When he died he was residing in Church Street in an area known as the Paddock, West Huddersfield. The Huddersfield archive service can find no reference to any burial in their municipal cemeteries for Adam Saville. He was originally baptised in the non comformist Methodist Church. Having searched all the non comformist and Church of England records in the Huddersfield area I still can find no reference of a burial. It is strange he has not turned up. The Dewsbury cemetery does not show a burial for him so I must go back to exploring the District of Huddersfield.
Thank you so much for your imput.
Regards, Andrew.

Hi Andrew

For a lot of years I have had the opinion that some burial records for this area are missing or incorrect.
I have not been able to find the records for a chapel in Crosland Moor which was just below the Workhouse on Blackmoorfoot Road. I think it was a Methodist and on a map it stated it had a Cemetery. I only saw this on one map and the chapel was pulled down and they have built bungalows on the land.
You could try to contact the main Methodist Headquarters to see if thy have any records of a cemetery in the area.
