Hi
I have been reviewing the army records of my 4 x gt grandfather and while I have had it in my mind that he was born in Auldearn, it actually mentions another place name besides Auldearn.
The name is Clowen, which I cannot find on any of the old maps. The closest I can find is Clune, which appears to have been a cluster of crofters cottages on the border of the Auldearn and Ardclach parishes. In fact the parish boundary apparently ran through one of the houses. Today there is an Easter Clune and a Wester Clune but no Clune. So I would say the cottages were abandoned at some point.
I have attached a copy of the relevant part of the document. As the person that wrote it also spelt Auldearn wrong it is possible they wrote what they heard and did not now any different. The person in charge of the Royal Artillery at Fort George at the time was a Capt Weetman who was English, possibly his clerk or what ever was English as well so this seems plausible.
Any opinions on whether you agree that Clowen could be Clune would be appreciated.
Thanks
Denise
