Rector Thomas Robinson
« on: Saturday 13 May 17 11:18 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the origins of my ancestor Sarah Jull (nee Robinson) c.1738 – 1789.

On her marriage entry at Teynham in 1764 she lists herself as being from nearby Buckland. After checking the registers for nearby Norton, I found the following information:

Baptism - 1737 07/01 - Jane ROBINSON (D of) Tho: (Rector otp) and Mary
Burial - 1761 05/28 ROBINSON Thomas The Rev: Mr. (Late Rector) OTP

I have looked at several registers for nearby parishes which are available online, which unfortunately does not include the neighbouring parish of Ospringe, but have yet to find any other Robinson’s within the same date range or a possible baptism record for Sarah.

After running a search for Thomas, I found the following information from Alumni Cantabrigienses Vol 1 (see attached).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next to determine if Thomas is Sarah’s father?

Hi,

I've checked the registers for Ospringe (PR), Faversham (PR), Buckland-next-Faversham (BT), and Preston-next-Faversham (BT) and can find no Jane Robinson baptised at any of those parishes at any time between 1720 and 1750.

Also, from my Archdeacon's Transcripts of Teynham, I have the Jull/Robinson marriage showing the bride's name as Sarah rather than Jane. So, I have also checked the same parishes for the baptism of a Sarah Robinson with the same results.

I've also checked the Canterbury Marriage Licences for both the Rev. Robinson's marriage as well as Jane's marriage in 1764 with no success.

If nothing else, at least you can eliminate these sources from your enquiry.  Sorry I can't be of much more help.

Sincerely,
Susan

Thank you for looking.

Given Thomas' history from the above attachement, it is likely his marriage to Mary and any other possible baptisms for his children, potentially including my Sarah, may have taken place outside of Kent.

Hi,

Yes, that is highly possible.

From the Clergy Database theclergydatabase.org.uk Thomas Robinson was admitted 26 July 1727 as Curate at Whitby, Ugglebarnby, diocese of York, also admitted curate of Eshdale chapel in the same parish on the same date.  Unfortunately, it is silent as to the date Thomas Robinson vacated his seats there but Thomas Stainton was added as curate to both the same Yorkshire chapels on 14 March 1730.

From the Topographical Dictionary of Kent found on http://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-kent/vol6/pp401-413 Thomas Robinson's exact date of induction to Norton was March 22, 1735.

So, there is a gap of approximate 5 years during which time he could have been anywhere.  But, perhaps it might be worth checking the two Yorkshire chapels to see if Thomas Robinson remained there until he moved south to Kent.

Best of luck with this search.

Sincerely,
Susan

Reading from the post above,if Rev Robinson was incumbant at Norton St Mary's from 1735 until his death in 1761.Is Sarah is his daughter I would think she would have been baptised there.
