Jeremiah Hennessy son of John Hennessy and Mary O'Leary 1831
« on: Sunday 14 May 17 16:20 BST (UK) »
I have recently been trying to reproduce some research done about 30 years ago. I was given details of a baptism in Skibbereen and hoped to be able to find others of the same family. The baptism was on 30th August 1831 and the child was Jeremiah Hennessy, the son of John Hennessy and Mary O'Leary. The original paid researcher said that the entry was not very clear to read, but he believed the mother's surname to be O'Leary.

My problem is that the particular page of the parish register on the NLI site is just about illegible, apart from the top line, which confirms I am looking at the right month. I have tried alering the light, contrast etc, but have got nowhere. Does anyone know if there is an LDS film of this parish which is any better ? Help !

Son and father's names abbreviated so difficult to know for sure mother looks like Mary L??ry to me no 'O', likely Leary.

I should add the person who transcribed it on Irish Genealogy doesn't agree at all.

Thanks a million, Sinann. It looks more like Hennessy to me than Murphy.  The name is too long for that I think. According to my information the godparents' names are supposed to be Charles Duggan and Norah Duggan. At least they are plausible names unlike what the transcription suggests. I think the original research may have come from the parish priest.

I'll have a further look on the Irish Genealogy site. I've only used it for civil registrations up until now. Your help is much appreciated.

I'm on a different computer now, I can see it a bit better.
No way it's Murphy, the long s could put someone off making them think it ended in hy so just went with Murphy.
Son's name begins with J I wouldn't be sure after that the father's is worse but I think it has an 's' up top at the end like you would find in an abbreviated James. Could be an abbreviated Latin spelling of course.
There is possibility the mother's surname could be Lucy, it would be worth have a look at the hand writing on a different page to see how long the L is written.

Second witness is Duggan, the first letter of the first witness is difficult Duggan or Goggan, probably Duggan.

Ideally finding another child on a good page would be great.

Gosh, Sinann, I don't know what to say. Your eyes are definitely better than mine. I agree totally about the long 's' and had that in mind myself when I rejected the Murphy possibility. I have spent many hours trawling some parishes before finding siblings in other families. I am chasing after the Hennessy family for relatives who were very good to me when I was a child. This will mean a lot to them. You're a star.
