Belfast Newsletter, 26 May1922, p.1: SHIELDS- May 25, 1922, at Royal Victoria Hospital (from gunshot wounds), William, fifth and dearly-beloved son of Robert and Sarah Shields, 32, Delaware Street, Interment notice later. Same date, page 7: RENEWED DISORDER IN BELFAST. Fierce Fighting in the East End… William Shields, a well-known footballer, was shot dead. (under Casualty List it says he was shot in the head)
Irish Times, 12 July 1922: On the 12th of July 1922 the Irish Times reported into the death of William Shields, aged 21 of 32 Delaware Street Belfast. Mr. Shields was returning from work when he was shot by a sniper. Witnesses at the inquest told how they reported the incident to soldiers who only laughed. Mr. Sheilds was a professional footballer and described as a very promising lad.
