brick wall - Robert Milligan
« on: Friday 09 June 17 14:47 BST (UK) »
Need help to solve this problem.

Robert Milligan married Margaret Mackie - not sure but maybe 1840's. Margaret dies AGED 44 in 1865. Death certificate in Anderston, Glasgow.
Sorry no other information.
Margaret described as widow of Robert Milligan "steam boat stoker". Boy do I need help finding Robert's death either in Scotland from 1855 or elsewhere.
Can anyone help find Robert's death?

Bill

Bill, have you got Robert and Margaret in any census? Which of their children are you following? In respect of Margaret Mackie, have you got her parents' names from her death reg?

Can't easily see the death you mention in 1865 in Anderston  :-\

hello

I think Elizabeth was born in 1855 not sure. Margaret's parents are given as Thomas Mackie deceased and Elizabeth McCulloch.
Sorry it is not much inof.

There is a Margaret Milligan, 18, and an Elizabeth Milligan, 16, boarding in Glasgow. Both showing as born in Glasgow. Is this the Elizabeth you mention?

However, mother looks to be MARY McKie not Margaret I think, going by this birth entry for Elizabeth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQWV-VR7

This is an 1855 birth cert, the first year of official registration in Scotland. For this year only, there was much more data captured. This cert should include parents' marriage details, parents' birth place and ages and other key info that is useful. Would be worth you checking it to see what it shows.

The 1865 death in Anderston does show as Mary Milligan/Mackie

This is the last birth of children I can see in 1857 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQWG-C9D   Might help when trying to narrow down Robert's death year range.

Sorry my error it is Mary as 1865 confirms. Thank you for your comments Monica.

Good advice re 1855. But as I said Robert's death is not yet found and it is this I am trying to solve. Hopefully!!

he must have died between 1857 and 1865 ... but if he was a stoker on steam boat maybe he was outside Scotland.

There is a death for baby Agnes in 1858 in Anderston I think (guess from age and place). If correct entry, this would show whether father Robert was alive still or deceased at that point.

Added: Finding them in 1861 would also help!
